Dentist-approved: First date dental care tips

Date dental care

Your smile is key to making a great first impression. But what can you do to make sure your teeth are date ready? We asked Smilepod’s Hygienist Samantha Ackerman to share her top dental care tips

1. Use a straw

If your date drink of choice is a fruity cocktail, or something soft and fizzy, try to always drink with a straw. Sugar and citrus can both cause dental decay and cavities so drinking through a straw can help limit the amount of time your teeth are exposed and provide an extra layer of protection.

2. Go electric

Good dental care is really all about technique, but it’s much easier to remove plaque effectively with an electric toothbrush.

3. Brush twice a day

It might sound obvious, but regular brushing makes all the difference. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste to remove any plaque build-up

4. Don’t rinse

Freshening up for a first date? To really reap the benefits of your fluoride toothpaste, don’t rinse with water when you brush.

5. Interdental cleaning

For that truly clean (and first kiss ready) feeling, interdental brushes or floss are essential for reaching the areas your toothbrush can’t reach.

6. Swear off sugar

When it comes to dental care, sugar is the enemy. Try to limit it in your diet as much as possible.

7. Stop smoking

Quitting smoking is not only good for your teeth, it’s essential for good overall health. And the really good news is that most of the tooth damage caused by smoking is completely reversible once you stop. Plus, a sparkling white smile always impresses on a date.

8. Book a date with your dentist

Regular check-ups and hygiene appointments are vital to good dental care – and a sure-fire way to make sure your smile stays intact.
